Possible Interpretations of Dreaming About Menstruation

As we’ve discussed in previous dream interpretation posts, there are several theories behind what dreams are and where they come from. But it is now widely accepted that they often have meaning for the dreamer. Learn more in our article about the psychology of dreaming.
Originally posited by Jung and now generally accepted by experts, is the belief that dreams have symbolic meanings.
One thing that always holds true, however, is that dreams are subjective and a very unique experience, with their meaning being individual and specific to the dreamer, and based around personal experiences as well as cultural beliefs.
With this in mind, it’s worth noting that people’s personal beliefs can influence perceived dream meanings, and this is why you’ll find references to spiritual, biblical, and psychological dream interpretation. In some cultures dreams are thought to serve as a warning sign, or to be a good or bad omen.
But whether or not you believe dreams hold spiritual significance, one thing that was originally posited by Jung and is now generally be agreed upon by experts, is that dreams have symbolic meanings. Keeping this in mind, let’s explore the interpretation of menstruation dreams.
Possible Meanings of Period Dreams
While dreams may appear to be arbitrary on the surface, this is unlikely the case. Often, they can be traced back to deeper meanings for the individual having the dream1, based on past experiences and current life circumstances.
By paying attention to the emotional state evoked by a dream, it’s possible to propose possible interpretations, leading to valuable insights.
The dreaming mind is an enigma, but researchers are developing a deeper understanding of the role of dreams. One prominent theory is that their purpose is to draw our full attention to unresolved issues we may not be facing up to during a difficult time2. By paying attention to the content – and crucially the emotional state evoked – by a dream, it may be possible to access the inner thoughts of our unconscious mind.
So what does does a menstruation dream mean? Following are some possible underlying emotions which may be highlighted by menstrual blood dreams.
Anxiety
The subject of menstruation remains largely taboo, and certainly a time that is concealed from others. The furtive behaviour sometimes employed by women to ensure privacy during their monthly period can, therefore, be construed as symbolic for secrecy.

It’s possible that dreams of menstrual blood may represent confidential personal issues or a secret you’re keeping, and any anxiety associated anxiety. Whether the source of the anxiety is a fear of being outed or a desire to share the truth, either way, it may manifest in this kind of dream.
Uncertainty
An interruption to a woman’s menstrual cycle is often the first sign that a woman is expecting, with the appearance of menstrual blood effectively ending the uncertainty of pregnancy. With this in mind, it’s natural that menstrual blood may symbolise uncertainty in a dream.
This type of dream may, therefore, indicate the desire for a resolution to an uncertain situation in real life, or simply represent the angst caused by being in a state of limbo.
Change
As much as periods can depict uncertainty, they may also signify positive changes, or some transition in your life.
It may simply imply a need to process the change.
Menstruation itself is a phase in a female’s life, first representing the transition from young girl to womanhood; and later, with their cessation, the shift away from reproductive age.
A dream of blood from menstruation, then, may be a reflection of a change in your circumstances.
The context of the dream and the emotional responses thrown up by it are likely to indicate your feelings about your altered situation, and it may not necessarily even represent particularly positive or negative feelings, but simply imply a need to process the change.
Reproductive Health
With menstruation being the most salient symbol of womanhood, vivid dreams about periods may well relate to preoccupations or concerns regarding sexuality, fertility, or the health of your reproductive system..
If in waking life you’re experiencing confusion or an epiphany about your sexuality, or alternatively have any concerns around your or your partner’s fertility, this may explain a dream about periods.
The Passing of Time
Following on from the theme of fertility, a dream of menstrual blood could also symbolically represent your biological clock, or thoughts, anxieties, or concerns related to family planning.
Periods are also linked to the cyclical nature of life, and may alternatively be connected to a fear of the passing of time as we grow older.
Shame / Disgust
Whilst I’ll be the first to advocate for women’s rights, it’s a sad truth that despite being a completely natural process, both generally and in some cultures in particular3, 4, 5, menstruation remains taboo.
And while it may not be ‘right’ (it’s not), the fact remains that a woman inadvertently having her time of the month exposed from blood-stained clothing is usually a humiliating experience.
Dreaming of menstrual blood stains may therefore indicate shame or disgust, which might be entirely unrelated to your period. If you are experiencing an unpleasant life situation which is bringing you feelings of this kind, it could point to one menstrual period dream explanation.
Transformation
Not all dreams about menstruating are negative; they may also be linked with positive themes of rebirth, new beginnings, creative energy, and emotional or spiritual healing.
When we go through any significant or major changes, it can profoundly impact our outlook on life, leading to both personal development and spiritual growth. To dream of period blood or menstruation may simply be recognition by the subconscious mind of this personal growth.
Power
The most basic and fundamental function of blood is to power our bodies. It’s the essence of all living creatures, and literally our life force – no symbols required here.
Dreams of menstruation may vey well be reminding you of your own feminine life force and power.
From here, we can extrapolate then, that blood appearing in a dream may represent our power. And when it takes on the specific form of menstrual blood, it’s no great leap to assume it indicates the distinct power of feminine energy.
To dream of significant amount of red blood from menstruation, may be a metaphor for an abundance of power, and in particular that related to your femininity.

Women are often stereotyped as the weaker, fairer sex. But the reality is that in difficult times, females possess extraordinary strength and have the capacity to be formidable warriors! Dreams of menstruation may vey well be reminding you of your own feminine life force and power.
When Men Dream About Menstruation
Above, we’ve focused on women dreaming about periods, but it’s also entirely possible that it might be a man having a dream of this nature.
For men, periods may be somewhat enigmatic, but there are likely still specific connotations or cultural beliefs attached to the subject.
Certainly menstruation is not generally something openly discussed, and is often kept hidden from men.
For a man, menstruation may symbolise life, in the same way they do for a woman.
It’s also possible that dependent upon a man’s culture and upbringing, periods may be linked with embarrassment or disgust6 – certainly they are not generally something openly discussed, and are often kept hidden from them.
Therefore, for a man dreaming about period blood, it’s arguably even more important to consider the context of the dream and the emotions it gives rise to when attempting to analyse its meaning.
If a man is currently engaged in family planning with this partner, such dreams may be clearly related to this phase of his life. But should this not be a prominent feature of his current situation, there is likely a different explanation.
Themes to consider may include secrecy or even shame, both of which have been covered above.
